A Trip Down Memory Lane

A trip down memory lane takes us back to the 2014 International Classic Bike Show, held at Stafford—a truly unforgettable event for Stainless Classics.

That year’s show was especially poignant, with the legendary John Surtees serving as guest of honour and presenting the show awards. Surtees, who sadly passed away not long after, was a towering figure in motorsport history and the only person ever to win World Championships on both two wheels and four. Meeting him was a privilege; I spoke with him several times over the weekend and found him to be a remarkably kind and humble man, despite his extraordinary achievements.

We were thrilled to receive the award of Best Trade Stand Display at Stafford, a recognition voted for by the visiting public. It was a proud moment for us, made even more special by having John himself present the award.

In the background of one of the photos from that day, a banner can be seen referencing the Henry Surtees Foundation—a charity John had established in memory of his son Henry, who tragically lost his life in a freak racing accident just two years prior. The foundation aimed to support young drivers and improve safety in motorsport, a cause close to John’s heart.

At the time of the show, John was in his 80s, yet still full of energy and passion for the sport. His career began in the early 1950s as a motorcycle racer, riding for iconic brands like Norton and Gilera. His rise was meteoric, and he eventually transitioned to Formula One, where he continued to make history. Many believe he should have been knighted for his contributions to British motorsport—a sentiment I wholeheartedly share. That weekend at Stafford remains one of the most cherished memories in my involvement with classic bikes.
